Growing up, I was around motorcycles a lot. As a kid I'd hang around my parents' waist as we'd go get gas or cruise to the grocery store. When I was 16 or so my dad (stupidly) let me take his GSX-R well beyond 3x the speed limit on some empty country roads. Both my younger cousins had motorcycles of their own and used them as their primary means of transportation in suburbia.

Always wanted to get one for myself, but never got around to it due to price, lack of need, lack of parking, winters, etc. etc.

20 something years later, and now I'm in a position to get one... and all I can think about is all the people I knew who got in horrible accidents. My parents had a friend get hit by a truck and die. A buddy in HS is now paralyzed from the waist down after getting rear-ended at a stop sign. Almost everyone has tumbled at least once and possibly broken something. As a teenager you think "eh, whatever." But now I'm nearing 40 with a wife and kids and can't help but think "I could do everything right and still something awful could happen.... it's selfish to take that risk." I've got people that count on me, now.

Am I being irrational? What are your thoughts?
