How to sandblast large items?

Sandblasting? large items

When I was a kid (< 14) I did blasting for my dad at his auto body shop. I got the job because I was small and could fit into tight spots wearing all the gear. We used a gas engine Joy air compressor and a sandblaster that could hold half of a 55 gallon drum of sand. I was blasting heavy gauge metal, tow truck bodies, flat bed semi trailers, and the like. Did it outside away from everything and just let the sand lay where it fell. We would buy sand by the 3/4 ton heaping pickup load. Being a half mile from the south end of lake Michigan made for cheap sand.

Sandblasting "Room" or large cabinet?

Years ago I bought a 4' x 6' steel yard shed with a sliding door. It is set up outside of the shop proper. In the wall opposite the door I installed an industrial type of exhaust fan (opening louvers on outside to prevent rain from blowing in). Before mounting the fan, I sealed any openings around the motor housing with silicone to seal out the grit dust.

Along one wall I installed a wooden shelf to support smaller items for blasting. To use this "room" I walk in and close the door leaving a small opening for air to enter. I mask up etc. The blaster is under the shelf. Grit settles to the floor where it gets shoveled up to recycle. An overhead light is there to illuminate things. Since I stand at 5' 6", I can just freely stand up in the shed. The compressor is mounted away from the shed to keep it from grit contamination.

This has worked well for me since the late 1970's.

A friend built a 2 x 4 framed space at one end of his shop and covered the studs with heavy clear vinyl to make a large walkin blasting room.

If you use a good pressure mask for breathing, both of these are great for blasting.

The only problem is that you get grit all over yourself!
