A biconvex lens is a simple lens with two convex surfaces in spherical form, usually having the same radius of curvature. These lenses are also referred to as convex-convex lenses.

As a type of simple lens, the biconvex lens is widely used for various applications, including controlling and focusing laser beams, quality imaging, and other optical instruments.

When light passes through a biconvex or plano-convex lens, it converges at a focus behind the lens, making it a converging or positive lens. The distance from the lens to the focus point is known as the lens's focal length. Due to the curvature on both sides, a biconvex lens has two focal points and centers, with the principal axis running through the middle of the lens.

The human eye lens is a prime example of a biconvex lens. For the eye to focus on near objects, light rays must bend more sharply to focus on the retina; less refraction is needed for distant objects. The lens must be highly elastic to alter its shape and become more or less convex, with higher convexity leading to greater refraction.

Some characteristic properties of a biconvex lens include:

  • Positive focal length
  • Shorter focal lengths
  • Ability to converge incident light
  • Capability to form both real and virtual images
  • Minimizes spherical aberration and can cancel coma and distortion with a conjugate ratio of unity

Biconvex lenses are symmetrical, with equal radii on both sides. They are typically recommended for virtual imaging of real objects and for positive conjugate ratios ranging from 0.2 to 5.

Biconvex Lenses - Uses & Applications

Biconvex lenses have numerous uses, including:

  1. Serving as magnifying or condensing lenses
  2. Used as objectives or magnifiers
  3. Employed in imaging systems such as telescopes, monoculars, microscopes, binoculars, cameras, projectors, etc.
  4. Creating virtual images for human eyes and real images for photographic films or optical sensors
  5. Used as burning glasses
  6. Applied in image relay and various industrial processes

Biconvex lenses are ideal for applications where a diverging beam of light is incident on the lens, and the exiting beam converges symmetrically.
