Next week I am going to change the brake pads on one of our semis. For us NAPA brake shoes are the easiest to buy. Just wondering where to buy the best brake shoes.

Does anyone know how to tell what kind/style of brake shoes are on a truck? That way I can tell someone (for instance Inland Truck Parts of North Platte, NE ) what type are on the truck for exchange.

Every brake shoe has a 4 character FMSI number that corresponds to its specific design. This is universal across manufacturers of replacement shoes. , , are just so examples. Finding that number isn't always the easiest or even possible especially with the wheel and drum still on. The common shoes are Eaton EB, ES and ES2, along with Meritor Q and Q+. Within these styles there are variations in width and some styles sometimes. EB has high and low mount, high can replace low with the right hardware but not vice versa. Extended service are common on later trucks, if you change your cams you can run them usually. The Eaton ones I mentioned use a single anchor while the meritors use a dual anchor.

There's a lot of charts and diagrams you can find online to help you determine what shoes you have. However any place worth their salt will have them in stock anyways and you have to take the cores back sometime so just pull them off and go get the new ones, life will be much easier that way.

There are many variations in friction blends, depends on the manufacturer and what you want to do with the truck as well as what you want to spend.

They also go by weight rating to determine shoe quality----------my experience is different from hill farmers for our type of work. The lb premium shoe is a drum killer. It seems lucky to get one set of shoes wore before the drum is dead. The lb shoe will allow about 1 and a half break jobs before it gets marginal. We run a mid grade and redo the cams and drums every shoe change just for liability . The lightest cheapest shoes just shine the drum up to where it looks chrome and stopping is pathetic and not worth the risk.

Stick with a name brand shoe and inquire what they do to prevent rust jacking of the pad off the shoe as well. If the shoes have been shot tumbled and have a natural steel appearance I wouldn't use them because nothing is worse than having a DOT issue because of cracked pads or to peel one off and have it take the shoe out the drum and toss it on the road
